A Whole New World: Textron Remediation, Environmental Justice, and Living with Contamination

“I just wanted a raft” – Diane Rose, neighborhood activist

Chemicals created by the industrial process contaminated the former Gorham site and the surrounding landscape, including Mashapaug Pond. A coalition of neighbors and activists are trying to make sure that they and their children can live a healthy life in the aftermath of industrial contamination. They’re working with Textron, checking the air quality in the houses adjacent to the site, and bringing their own test kits down to the pond. And perhaps most importantly, they’re celebrating the pond, reminding Providence about this beautiful forgotten space within the city limits.
